Obviously, I get it. I embrace productivity hacks as much as anyone else, with one big caveat:
Please, please don't turn your many social media accounts into an echo chamber.
I've blogged before about the benefits of social media schedulers, and use them for at least 10 of my own accounts, as well as those of my Firebrand Messaging clients. I maintain that these apps, as well as apps like IFTTT, can be a godsend for busy business owners. Still, I'm careful to ensure that each account receives customized content - even if I'm mentioning the same subject, I change it up to fit the particular platform. And if you don't want your social media to become noise to your followers, you should do the same.
Here are three things to keep in mind as you craft your social media content.
Be mindful of formatting. Maybe this is a personal pet peeve of mine, but I find it irritating when a business' Facebook page is full of cross-posted tweets: the links are ugly and non-descriptive, the 140-character maximum seems stunted, and it just seems obvious the business isn't prioritizing engagements with its Facebook followers. Of course, that's just one example of how cross-posting can be a turnoff, but I think it's the most prevalent. Using each social media platform to its best advantage (including images on the platforms that support them, adding descriptive text where possible, etc.) takes a little more time - albeit less so if you're using a scheduler - but is worth the effort.
Remember the importance of value. In a previous post, I wrote about why you should be concerned with creating - and sharing - valuable content. Your most engaged fans and followers, the ones with the most potential for becoming true evangelists for your brand, are likely going to be watching several of your social media accounts. By varying the content you feature on each platform, you're rewarding their attentiveness with a richer experience, and giving yourself even more of an opportunity to shine.
I realize social media is a burden to many companies, but it's such an important part of doing business today. If outsourcing the task intrigues you, please take a look at our services and let us know if we can help!
